Delicious Dali

After our adventure in Tiger Leaping Gorge we headed south to Dali for a few days of relaxation and tasty food. Dali is famous for its Bai food, one of the many ethnic minorities in Yunnan. The restaurants usually display their ingredients in front of their shop, allowing the customers to choose which items they would like the chef to cook up for them.

We tried a local mushroom dish as well as an exotic stir-fry with lichen, seaweed and seaweed flowers (which were harvested from the nearby lake).

Tasty!

For this meal we had a tofu and arugala soup, fried green beans and an omelette with three types of flowers.

Fried tofu street vendor...greasy, but so good.

When we weren't enjoying culinary delights we spent time relaxing at our sociable guest house.

We also wandered extensively around Dali's old town, enjoying the interesting architecture and perusing the many souvenir shops.

A tour guide leading a group of bewildered Chinese tourists.

We went on a bike ride around town, taking in the lovely view of the mist shrouded mountains.

A tour boat on Erhai Lake.

We strolled around the market watching in amazement as the locals haggled over the goods on sale.

There was a huge variety of local mushrooms available.

Fermented egg products.

A vegetable vendor...note the enormous melon at the bottom!

The skin of a freshly butchered cow, which this man folded up and tucked into his motorcycle.

The grocery stores had a lot of hilarious but sometimes appalling products...Happy hours beer and Bomb liquor, two well-named and very cheap brands of Chinese alcohol.
